Pair: A term used when a player's first two cards are numerically identical.
Palette: A wooden tool used to move cards on the table.
Pat Hand: A hand in blackjack which is hard 17 or great and does not require a hit.
Pass Line: Refers to the area on the pass line layout on the craps board where pass line bets are placed.
Pass Line Bet: In the game of craps, a wager on the pass line that an dice outcome will be reached, one bets are placed on the pass line they cannot be removed until a win or lose outcome has occurred.
Pay Any Catch Ticket: Refers to a keno ticket that pays regardless of how many numbers are caught.
Payoff:
- Refers to the dealer paying out the player the winnings of bet.
- The player cashing out his chips with the casino.
Payoff Schedule: Every poker machine has a payoff schedule which is displayed on the front of the machine and shows the payout for each possible hand for the numbers of credits bet.
Payout:
- Refers to the winnings paid to the player by the casino.
- With video poker or slot machine the payout occurs when the cash-out button is pressed, all remaining credits are directed to the player's tray.
Payout Schedule: The payout schedule is a table of winning combinations that is imprinted on the front of the slot machine should a given winning combination occur and the amount which will be award to the player at that time.
Payline: On a slot machine, refers to a straight or even zig-zagged line that crosses through each symbol on the each reel in which the winning combination would be evaluated.
Pay Table: In the game of keno, a table that shows the payout for each win.
Pit: Relates to area of gaming tables that a pit boss is responsible for.
Pit Boss: A casino employee who supervises all floor personnel in a particular gaming area.
Place Bet: On a craps layout, the place numbers are 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 which are the box numbers in the layout area of the board.
Player:
- A term used to describe a person who places bets (gambles) in casino or card room, also referred to as the customer.
- In the game of baccarat, an option on the table layout in which the customer can bet, does not refer to customer itself.
Point: In the game of craps, refers to the position the puck is placed after the outcome of the come out roll has occurred, depending which box number has been rolled establishes the point.
Point Count: Net value of the card count at the end of a hand is the point count.
Positive Progression: Refers to various systems of wagering a player may use where they increase their bets after a win.
Pot: In the game of poker, the pot refers to a sum of money that players wager during a single hand of poker, as each player continues to equal or raise the bet (a wager that the hand the player holds is better than the opponents) the pot becomes larger. The word pot was likely derived from the word jackpot.
Preferential Shuffling: An act performed by the dealer who shuffles the cards early to minimize the advantage of players who may be card-counting.
Press: The increasing of a bet by double.
Probability: Probability is the mathematical odds of a certain event occurring, in gambling that would mean the possibility of a players wager winning.
Progressive: Progressive betting is where the payout amount keeps increasing with every bet until the jackpot is won.
Progressive Jackpot: Several machines are linked together and with each player bet on any one of the machines increases the jackpot amount, to win the progressive jackpot requires players to play maximum credits. Once the jackpot is won the jackpot is reset to it's initial starting value.
Progressive Slots: Played on slot machines that are linked together, the jackpot amount is much higher than stand-alone machine, the jackpot amount continues to rise until won and at that time all machines are reset to a jackpot minimum. Generally requires a maximum bet.
Prohibition: A law that was imposed on gambling and in particular slot machines in California from 1911 to 1934, prohibition in the past has also been imposed on alcohol, transportation, exports and imports in many states and at many different times.
Proposition Bets: Refers to bets located in the center of the craps board layout.
Punto Banco: A variation of baccarat that is played in the U.S., Australia and Canada, also known as North American Baccarat, players may bet on the player or the banker.
Puck: In the game of craps, a round item white on one side and black on the other which is used to mark the point by the dealer after the come out roll.
Push: A term used in blackjack when both the player and the dealer have the card total, same as tie or stand-off.
